WINNING PAINTING OF THE TOM URWIN FINE ART AWARD:'MUM FACING DEMENTIA' Prize awarded by HRH Prince Michael of Kent.
Facing Dementia was painted and completed in 2022, after I created a body of work on my Mother, diagnosed with Vascular Dementia in 2018. It shows Jean at the beginning of her journey, still able to recognise something is wrong. Winning the Fine Art Award from the SWA would have been an especially proud moment for Mum as throughout her life she was a fighter for Women's Rights and an Active member of Women's Aid.
This oil painting is of my sister, Sally, undergoing treatment for cancer, having lost her crowning glory. I collected, combed and literally applied her hair to the canvas so it became deep rooted and united with her portrait. Sally’s baldness is juxtaposed with decoration, a colourful scarf and make up, to accentuate her eyes and where her eyebrows and eyelashes once were. Although my painting is an attempt to connect with and process our feelings of fear, attachment and loss, the top left of my composition includes an abstract canvas of vibrancy and positivity.
